How to read a price chart

A price chart is just a picture of a price over time. Once you know what the two edges mean, the rest is easy.

What do the two edges of a chart mean?

  • Across the bottom: time. Older on the left, now on the right.
  • Up the side: price. Higher up means a higher price.
Price
 $110 | /
 $105 | /\ /
 $100 | ____/ \/
      +-------------------- time
        Mon Tue Wed Thu

A line going up to the right means the price rose over that time; going down means it fell.

What is the difference between a line chart and candles?

A line chart joins one price per moment (usually the closing price). Candles show four prices for each moment: where it opened, its highest, its lowest and where it closed.

CandlesOpen, high, low and close per pointSeeing how much it swung inside each day

How do I read one candle?

Here is one day of a coin as a single candle:

PartPriceMeaning
Open$100The price when the day started
High$112The top of the thin line above
Low$96The bottom of the thin line below
Close$108The price when the day ended
  • Green candle: it closed higher than it opened ($100 → $108, up $8).
  • Red candle: it closed lower than it opened.
  • The thin lines ("wicks") show how far it went before coming back.

What do the time ranges like 1D or 1Y mean?

They choose how much time the chart covers.

RangeCoversBest for
1DThe last dayWhat happened today
5DThe last 5 daysThis week’s moves
1MThe last monthThe recent direction
6MThe last 6 monthsThe bigger trend
1YThe last yearThe big picture

The same coin can look "up" on 1D and "down" on 1Y. Always check which range you are looking at.
