Market positioning, funding and open interest
Next to a coin on the trade page you may see "Market positioning: Balanced". It is a mood meter for traders who use borrowed money. Here is what it measures, one question at a time.

Basahin sa FilipinoWhat is market positioning?
It shows how traders with borrowed money (leverage) are betting on a coin right now: how many expect a rise (long) and how many expect a fall (short).
Long ███████████████░░░░░ 72% betting it goes up Short 28% betting it goes down
It describes how people are betting. It does not predict where the price goes.
What do "Balanced" and "Crowded" mean?
| Label | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | Bets are spread fairly between both sides | A sudden chain of forced sales is less likely |
| Crowded long | Most leveraged traders bet on a rise | A dip could force many of them to sell at once |
| Crowded short | Most leveraged traders bet on a fall | A jump could force many of them to buy back at once |
Tradeground calls it crowded when 75% or more of top traders are long (or 35% or less), or when funding passes ±0.05%.
What is "Top traders long"?
Among the biggest accounts on Binance Futures, the share that are betting on a rise. 61% long means 61 of every 100 big accounts expect the price to go up, and 39 expect it to fall.
| Top traders long | Reading |
|---|---|
| about 50–70% | A normal lean: crypto traders usually lean long a little |
| 75% or more | Crowded long |
| 35% or less | Crowded short |
What is funding, and why can it be negative?
Futures contracts never expire, so exchanges keep their price close to the real price with a small payment between the two sides, usually every 8 hours. That payment is funding.
| Funding | Who pays whom | On a $1,000 bet, every 8 hours |
|---|---|---|
| +0.05% | Longs pay shorts (too many longs) | Longs pay $0.50 |
| +0.01% | Longs pay shorts a little | Longs pay $0.10 |
| −0.004% | Shorts pay longs a tiny amount | Shorts pay $0.04 |
| −0.05% | Shorts pay longs (too many shorts) | Shorts pay $0.50 |
Funding near zero means calm. Big funding in either direction means one side is paying a lot to stay in: a sign of crowding.
What is open interest (OI)?
The total value of all futures bets still open on a coin. "OI 24h" is how much that total changed over the last day.
| OI 24h | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Up a lot (e.g. +15%) | Lots of new borrowed money coming in: bigger swings possible |
| About flat (e.g. −0.3%) | Little change: calm |
| Down a lot (e.g. −15%) | Bets being closed, or traders being liquidated |
What is a liquidation chain reaction?
When too many leveraged traders sit on one side, a small move against them can force their positions closed, and those forced sales push the price further, which forces more closes.
- 1Bitcoin is at $77,500 and most leveraged traders are long.
- 2It dips 5% to $73,625. The riskiest longs hit their liquidation price and are sold by force.
- 3Those forced sales push the price down further, to $72,000.
- 4More longs get liquidated, and the drop speeds up within minutes.
That is why "Balanced" is calmer: no side is packed tight enough to set off a chain. See the leverage and liquidation article for how a single liquidation works.
Does this affect my Tradeground trades?
Not your normal trades: they use practice cash with no leverage, so nothing gets liquidated. If you practise leverage with Tradeground Pro, a crowded market is a warning sign: a sharp move can reach your liquidation price fast. The pill shows real traders’ mood on Binance Futures, refreshes every few minutes and only appears for coins that have a futures market.
